This appeared to work no more error in the extension-errors log about EPS and ps2pdf and the file will open (though the ones I did try seemed to be memory monsters and popped a C++ runtime error after sucking up all available ram). PATH=%PAL:PortableAppsDir%\CommonFiles\Ghostscript\bin %PAL:PortableAppsDir%\CommonFiles\Ghostscript\lib %PATH% By proper location, that means: X:\PortableApps\InkscapePortable X:\PortableApps\CommonFiles\Ghostscript Note that X:\PortableApps can be replaced with another directory, but is recommended. I edited the \InkscapePortable\App\AppInfo\Launcher\InkscapePortable.ini by adding the following line at the end of the section: As long as you install them in the proper location and are using the latest versions of each, it's automatic. With some trial and error, I hit upon this as a way to fix it: Inkscape was not able to find the paths to the GS files.

Today I hit a wall in Inkscape trying to import an EPS file. Inkscape >1.1 will no longer bundle Ghostscript (reason: license compliance/legal consultation), effectively removing out of the box support for EPS/PS import. Ghostscript is an Open Source Postscript interpreter that will allow your software to read industry-standard files.

These binaries are part of Ghostscript and came bundled with previous versions of Inkscape (<1.1). Inkscape needs additional software to open EPS files. I've been using the PAF Scribus with Ghostscript without issue for some time. Inkscape offers EPS/PS import if it finds binaries like ps2pdf in PATH.
